Lack of German Language Courses in Helmand Raises Students’ Concerns and Hopes

A number of young women and men in Afghanistan’s southern province of Helmand are calling for German language courses to be made available in their province, either through online platforms or in-person classes.

Students say that learning German could provide them with valuable educational and professional opportunities, particularly for those hoping to pursue higher education, scholarships, or other opportunities abroad. However, they say access to German language education remains extremely limited in Helmand.

According to students, German language courses are currently available mainly in larger cities such as Kabul and Mazar-e-Sharif, leaving many young people in Helmand without access to similar educational opportunities.

Several students have expressed hope that online or offline German language programs could be established in Helmand. Online courses, they believe, could be particularly helpful for students who are unable to travel to other provinces due to financial, social, or security challenges.

However, students say that efforts to establish such courses face restrictions and have not yet received permission from the Taliban authorities. This has created further uncertainty for young people, especially female students, who already face significant limitations in accessing education.

Despite these challenges, many students remain hopeful that opportunities to learn foreign languages, including German, will eventually become available in Helmand. They believe that access to language education could help them develop new skills, connect with international educational opportunities, and build a better future.

Students are calling on educational institutions, language centers, and relevant authorities to support the establishment of accessible German language courses in Helmand, whether through safe in-person classes or online learning programs.
